A Modern Gatsby Brunch Wedding

#ArtisandNicole2014

Challenge

When the opportunity arose to tell our first wedding story, we were delighted that it was for someone so close to The Soa Brand family. When it came time to plan the wedding of a successful publicist in Atlanta known for amazing affairs, there were no details spared in creating the experience of a lifetime.

Nicole Garner and Artis Scott were wed in a lavish ceremony inspired by The Great Gatsby at the historic Wimbish House in Atlanta, GA on December 28th, 2014. This love story began when the two met in the ice cream aisle of the grocery store and as they all say, “the rest is history.”

Venue

The Wimbish House was decked out floor to ceiling with details inspired by both The Great Gatsby and the grandeur of the 1920s style. Before entering the space, guests were greeted with a custom three foot tall 3D “LOVE” sign preparing them for the beautiful celebration the word implied.

Wake Up Shots

Upon entering the space, the guests were welcomed with signs branded in the wedding style, Krispy Kreme donuts and morning shots of milk with the option to spike them with Baileys or Kahlua. With their wake up shots in hand and a sweet treat to nibble on, guests were escorted into the ceremony space. The first thing that caught their eye was ivory drapery illuminated with a custom gobo of the couple’s monogram branded in the wedding theme.

Tall white columns flanked either side with large white ostrich feathers atop. As guests descended down the stairs, rows of floating candles in glass vases were surrounded by mounds of rose petals aligning the aisle. The end of the aisle was decorated with four foot tall pedestals with tall glass trumpet vases adorned with large white ostrich feathers and curly gold decoration.

An Anxious Bride

As guests got their fill of the morning treats, our bride, Nicole, anxiously and excitedly began her beauty preparations with her bridesmaids. Decked in custom kimonos, the bride and bridesmaids talked love, marriage, celebration, and selfies. They enjoyed champagne, light bites, and relaxing music in the bridal suite as they awaited the time for the ceremony to start.

Ready for Love

This couple was not your regular couple. They employed a live band to serenade the guests and to announce their arrival. John Coltrane’s Sentimental, played by the band, began as family members were seated followed by a special performance by a ballet dancer, who doubled as the flower girl, accompanied by Lena Horne’s Let Me Love You. Guests arose as the bride was escorted by her father to India Arie’s Ready for Love.

The couple exchanged their vows in a beautiful, intimate, and humorous ceremony which featured a Truce Bell Ceremony in place of the traditional sand or candle lighting ceremony.

As the couple said their final “I dos,” they walked down the aisle as husband and wife for the first time to UGK’s Int’l Players Anthem. They were followed by their wedding party to take pictures while guests enjoyed the cocktail hour.

The Cotton Club

Our team worked hard to ensure all the details of the space and the bride’s vision were well executed. During the cocktail hour, guests were invited to explore the second floor of The Wimbish House which involved a functioning vintage Victrola playing sounds of the 1920s. We created themed rooms that had something special for guests. The first room was The Cotton Club that featured a small candy bar of mint and gold colored candy as well as candy cigarettes and faux cigarette holders. The second room was The Speakeasy with customized mini bottled filled with Courvoisier as favors for the guests. The last room was The Great Gatsby room. We created custom book covers featuring a variety of concepts, images, and prints from The Great Gatsby book. In this room, guests were encouraged to provide advice and well wishes to the couple as they began their journey into love and marriage.

A Little Party Ain’t Hurt No Body

Proving to be the couple of inspiration, they surprised their guests with a special choreographed performance by DanceVerse inspired by the most recent Great Gatsby movie. Guests enjoyed the performance from their tables draped in mint green linen and adorned with gold chargers and flatware. The centerpieces played with height by featuring ivory ostrich feather centerpieces atop tall trumpet vases and low florals of hydrangeas, blush pink and ivory roses, hypericum berries, lily grass, and clear water pearls.

XOXO

The Estate table featured a custom satin mint green linen with a sequin table runner in mint green. Beautiful gold starburst chargers we placed with mint green linen and gold flatware. We styled the estate table with ivory ostrich feather centerpieces atop glass trumpet vases filled with gold beans and golden “XO” wood blocks. We continued the high/low theme by creating short centerpieces of hydrangea, blush pink and ivory roses, hypericum berries, lily grass, and bronze marbles. We added special elements such as hand painted acrylic artwork that featured love notes.

#TeamBride/#TeamGroom

The bride and groom entertained their guests with both a DJ and live music from the band as well as include some very exciting renditions of The Newlywed Game, Last Couple Standing and their take on the traditional garter and bouquet toss. Instead of tossing her bouquet into a crowd of anxious bachelorettes, Nicole invited all the single ladies to enjoy a game of musical chairs. Let’s just say it got VERY COMPETITIVE! The winner was gifted with a signature bottle of the wedding alcohol. The groomsmen, not to be left out enjoyed their own impromptu football toss in exchange for the traditional garter toss.

As the wedding reception winded down, Nicole – a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated – was serenaded by her sorority sisters. As guests finished their meals and their desserts of red velvet wedding cake, the couple enjoyed their last dance before exiting to a parade of petals in a vintage Rolls Royce.

The couple celebrated the New Year and the start to their happy marriage in Costa Rica.

Her Details

The Bride wore Galina Signature during the ceremony and a custom House of Chapple dress with Badgley Mischka heels. Her bouquet featured hydrangeas, blush pink and ivory roses, calla lillies, tulips, and feather elements.

His Details

The groom and his groomsmen wore grey suits. The groomsmen boutonnières were ivory roses adorned with feather detail and hand painted wooden footballs to celebrate the groom’s love of football. His bout featured a hand painted dolphin to commemorate his favorite team – the Miami Dolphins.

Special thank you to all the vendors, family and friends who made this wedding story possible!
