How to Celebrate International Peace Day?

0001-62339303On September 21 we celebrate International Peace Day. “The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.” Unfortunately, we are living in a time where police brutality, poverty, bullying and discrimination is common globally. Allow International Peace Day to be a day full of harmony and also the beginning of a life long commitment of encouraging and promoting peace. In light of September 21st here are a few ways to celebrate International Peace Day:

 

Have a Peace Rally

Kick off the day with a rally! Have fun, be an activist, and gather up individuals who may share common ideas on peace. Inspire, others around you to create signs and to become involved in the Peace Rally.

Have a Picnic

Invite your family and friends out on a nice day and celebrate each other. Surround yourself with positive and motivating people and have a good time. Gather a couple of   board games, card games, and your favorite wine. What better way to celebrate a day of peace than to be around your loved ones?

Volunteer

Being aware of your local community as well as the global world is essential. Become a global citizen and examine what parts of your everyday life lack peace. Whether a school or non-profit  organization needs extra assistance, volunteer and promote acts of peace.

Yoga

Indulge in a peaceful exercise. Yoga is a popular practice known for relaxation. While it is possible to become fit it is also known for calming the mind and body. Take time out of your day to take a class and challenge your inner peace.

Meditate

Take a break from the world. In similarity to yoga, “the purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful.” Inner peace begins in your thoughts. In order to “be free from worries and mental discomfort” one must become comfortable of being alone. A simple way to perfect this is by practicing meditation.

Spa Day

After a long week at work, treat yourself. We are always  swamped in millions of tasks that we forget to stop and appreciate ourselves. Being stressed and overwhelmed is not healthy or peaceful. The spa is an amazing place to clear your mind, have peace from within, and clock out from your daily schedule.

Read

It is common for people to say they never have time to read. Well this is the day. Drop everything that you are doing. Take a break from twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other forms of social media. Find your favorite book and a place of solitude. Emerge and explore the text. Fall in love with your favorite book again.
