DIY Tuesday: Sunnies Organizer

It’s the summer…at least officially this Friday. The sun is shining bright, what’s the first thing you’re going to grab before you step outside? That’s right…your sunnies! If you’re like us and just thrown your sunglasses anywhere in the house, you’ve probably encountered problems like: not being able to find them, they’re scratched, or worse they’ve broken. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a way to properly organize them? That’s what Allison from ‘Dream a Little Bigger‘ Craft Blog did. She created a simple and functional sunglass organizer that will take you literally 20 minutes…maybe longer if you are craft-challenged.

All you need is a frame large enough to hold however many sunglasses/ glasses you own, decorative ribbon (at least 1/2 inch wide), a stapler/ staple gun, and paint (optional), and of course a little bit of time.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Remove all unnecessary hardware (ie brackets, glass, factory picture of people you don’t know)
  2. Optional: if you plan on painting your frame, this is the time to do it while it bare and hardware free. Spray paint of paint with the color of your choice and let dry for at least 30 minutes to an hour.
  3. Measure frame and figure out how far you the spaces in between each row of ribbon will need to be. If necessary, take out a pair of large and small sunnies to measure the difference. Possibly you could measure it out so that the smaller specs go near the top and the larger go to the bottom. Mark the area you want to place your ribbon
  4. Cut out ribbon, of the same length, and place…with the patterned/shiny side facing out…in the areas you marked so that you can now staple them to the frame. Staple ribbon on each side, making sure it is just taut enough to be sturdy for your heaviest sunnies.
  5. Allison, decided not to put a backing on her frames, but why not take this DIY a step further? You could cover the back of your frame with cork board, cardboard wrapped in fabric, or just fabric to give it a finished look! All you have to do is find the material of your choice and staple it to the back of your frame
  6. Hang your frame and enjoy!

Event Idea: wouldn’t this be a cool display to do if you were having a ‘Sunnies Swap’ Party? You could invite friends over and all of you could display sunglasses that you are willing to swap! Just pour out the cocktails, turn up the tune, and enjoy a crafty and simple event idea you can do this weekend!
